How I Was a Struggling Homeschool Mom

Before you decide to work with me, I want you to know a little about my homeschool journey.

When I was getting started with homeschooling, I felt overwhelmed. I remember thinking, “I wish there was a mom who has been there and done that who could just tell me what to do.” What I wanted was someone to help me succeed at homeschooling my kids.

With very little guidance from one friend, I got started. Each day, I was sitting down to help my kids through their curriculum. I had succeeded at teaching my oldest to read, write, do basic math, and so forth. However, I was struggling to teach my youngest these skills. In fact, getting my youngest to simply sit down was difficult.

I Was a Good Mom But…

Prior to having children, I worked in a nationally accredited preschool and taught physical education at an elementary school. I have siblings who are fifteen years younger than me, and I had been very involved in their preschool years. As a former public school teacher, I knew I was capable of teaching classrooms full of children.

I had so much experience working with kids. I had literally taught hundreds of children, and I knew I was a good mom, but I was struggling to educate my own child.

How could this be?

I felt frustrated, lost, embarrassed, alone, and defeated. While I continued homeschooling my oldest child, I enrolled my youngest in a private school and found a therapist to help my family.

Nurturing the Parent-Child Bond

During our time with an excellent therapist, I learned one overarching lesson. That lesson was to protect my bond with my child. During the year and a half my daughter attended private school, I worked very hard to nurture my connection with her.

To be honest, I still work hard to protect my relationship with her. You see, my youngest child is wired differently than many kids. She does not like to be touched. And if you don’t share her interests, communication can be challenging.

From this child, I have learned many lessons, but the greatest is to protect the parent-child bond. While this sounds simple, it can be challenging. As a certified life coach, I can teach you the skills to nurture your relationship with your child. These skills are essential if you want to succeed at homeschooling your kids.

Returning to Homeschooling

While my oldest continued to homeschool until she enrolled in our local community college, my youngest attended private school for a year and a half. The first year went well. However, circumstances beyond our control changed at her school. As a result, we cautiously returned to homeschooling my youngest child again.

When my youngest daughter returned to homeschooling, I would repeat this mantra to myself: “Connection Before Curriculum.”

When the curriculum was challenging for my daughter and she had difficulty regulating herself, I regulated myself. This thought, “Connection Before Curriculum,” helped me remain calm and patient. As a result, I have improved and protected my relationship with my daughter.
